Opportunities and a second chance!
After Hurricane Florence visited North Carolina, several counties were declared natural disaster areas and funds became available through the Disaster Recovery Employment Program (DREP) to assist these counties in storm-related clean-up. To be eligible for the program, an individual needed to have lost their job, due to the hurricane, or have been unemployed for over 13 weeks. Junious Winston fit the criteria. After being accepted into the program, he was placed with Bertie County Government. Junious removed debris from the county’s drainage system and ditches. He also assisted with improving the county’s infrastructure in preparing for future natural disasters. Working under the supervision of Barry Anderson, Junious would gain valuable work skills and establish a good work ethic and rapport with this supervisor and co-workers.
As the program was coming to an end, Junious needed to find other full-time employment to support him and his family. By gaining additional work skills and establishing a good work ethic and rapport, his supervisor made a referral to Cooke Electric. After his interview, Junious was offered full-time employment with Cooke Electric and is now earning more money and is enrolled in classes to earn his electrical license! We congratulate Junious on doing a great job with Bertie County Government and wish him well in his new career!
